:: Tribal Belly Dance ::
...What is tribal style, how did it develop? What are the differences between the Jamila Salimpour/Bal Anat format, Fat Chance Belly Dance's® ATS® and tribal fusion? Is all fusion tribal?
Tribal belly dance is highly regarded for its precision and fluidity, captivating but subtle expressiveness, folkloric flavor, beautiful lines, and empowered femininity. Emphasizing the development of a strong overall tribal belly dance discipline, the class will focus on various styles and influences with a special emphasis on the Jamila Salimpour/Bal Anat format (the original foundation of tribal style/vintage tribal), Fat Chance's American Tribal Style® (ATS®), modern fusions, and flamenco stylization—one of tribal's principal inspirations.
Using the Jamila Salimpour/Bal Anat, Fat Chance and Suhaila Salimpour formats for technique, the class will focus on building core strength, balance, isolations, musical interpretation, finger cymbal proficiency, improvisation and choreography skills. Alongside the breakdown and drilling of movements, we will create a comfortable and challenging space to move with intuition, expression, trust, and empowerment--integral building blocks of this belly dance style. Students will also explore historical context, cultural sensitivity, and the evolution of tribal belly dance through videos, handouts and articles. Bring your finger cymbals!
*Marta is level 1 certified in the Jamila Format (JSBD), working towards testing in level 2 and her teaching certification. She has Suhaila's full permission to teach Jamila's format in her own classes. Marta is also an ATS® teacher (level 1 & 2) certified by Fat Chance Belly Dance®, and has closely studied with Jill Parker, regarded as the originator of tribal fusion belly dance*

:: Flamenco Technique for Tribal Belly Dance(TM)* ::
...Fingers, hands, arm work, body work, body lines, and turns...for tribal style
As a direct inspiration and root of ATS® and tribal fusion belly dance, flamenco technique and stylization are critical elements for dancers seeking to move beyond beginner levels in their studies. Correct posture, frames, and lines will be broken down and drilled. Students will study in-depth: floreos (wrist circles) and hand/finger use, braceo (arm carriage and stylization), demanding turns, and combinations in conjunction with Fat Chance's ATS® slow movement vocabulary and other tribal stylizations such as Jill Parker's format (widely regarded as the originator of tribal fusion belly dance).
This is a low intermediate and above level class. Requirements include knowledge of FCBD® ATS® vocabulary and a strong technical foundation.
*This is a trademarked class, fully developed by Marta and inspired by her years of extensive training in flamenco.*

:: 'Avant-Garde' Tribal Fusion Belly Dance ::
Rooted in the pops and locks of belly dance as well as its most lyrical expressions, Marta's 'avant-garde' tribal fusion style is contemporary, organic, and innovative, continually merging western and non-western influences. It breaks boundaries, it tells a story.
Beginning with a formal tribal belly dance foundation, the goal is to find meaning, emotion and essence within the music and to speak it through the body. Students will study varying fusion techniques and dance genres (including flamenco, tango, Latin dances, and modern dance), while mastering loose choreographies and improvisation. Students will also explore historical context, cultural sensitivity, and the continued development of tribal fusion belly dance through videos, handouts and articles.
